To Read or Not to Read: The Movie Question

Standard

I stumbled upon this blog today. The post was about reading, or rather, about not reading. It was about books begin turned into movies and how people are watching these films and not reading the books.

The authors point of view was that books shouldn’t be made into movies (even good movies) because then people stop reading the books.

I tend not to watch movies based on the books I’ve read because ti ruins the story in my head. This is especialyl true for books that I love or feel deeply for. Case in point, Harry Potter. I started reading the books later than some, mainly because I was over the age of 18 at the time and it wasn’t the “cool” thing to do. But then i started reading them and fell in love with the world that was created.

And then the movies came out. I watched the first one and was annoyed because the Hogwarts in the movie wasn’t like the Hogwarts in my head. But that was ok, because the movie was still cool.

And then the next few movies came out and the books had been longer so the movies had to squeeze more content into the same space. And I get more than annoyed, I was disappointed. Some of my favorite parts were left out!

When the last movie came out I had a friend say that I should watch it, as it had been a while since I’d read the books, but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. I didn’t want to let go of the fantasy in my head.

There’s another book that’s being made to a movie. “The Hunger Games”, I love that book. The whole series. But, I saw the picture of the person who they got to play Katniss.

She’s blond! Of course they died her hair brown for the movie, but she’s still nothing like I pictured in my head. Makes me sad. Where’s the olive complexion? The thin frame? The hard eyes? Don’t get me started on the other people. As much as I love the books I just don’t think I’m going to be able to bring myself to see the movie.

Thankful Tuesday

Standard

I know, I know. It’s not Tuesday. In fact, it’s Thursday. But that’s ok. Because it’s the thought that counts.

  1. Professors with kids-because they understand when one of your kids gets sick.
  2. Quick strep test-because now it only takes five minutes to know if your kids is going to school the next day
  3. Cranberry juices-because my son love it and it always makes everything better.
  4. Grocery Stores-I don’t know what I would do if I wasn’t able to go down to the grocery store when I needed. If I had to grow my own food we’d all be dieing of starvation.
  5. Head phones-because I don’t think I could put up with the youtube videos my kids watch with out them (really, the keyboard cat is NOT that funny)
  6. Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy-Movie and the five part trilogy, because Douglas Adams makes me laugh
  7. 42-the answer to the ultimate question of life the universe and everything
  8. Blankies-because they make everything all better
  9. Teddy bears-because they make everything all better
  10. Naps-because they make everything all better

Cake or Pie OR Life the Universe and Everything Part 2

Standard

So, the last time I pulled out my list of likes I got to number 17. I’ve been trying to think about what this part of my list should include and saw a prompt suggesting the topic for a blog post be “Cake or Pie” and knew that I’d found it. I love pie and cake. So, my answer is BOTH! Must have cake and pie. I’ll be honest, I’ve not tried most of these recipes, but they all look so good. Click on the picture to be taken to the recipe.

18. Pecan Pie-a southern classic that I just love. Where I live there are pecan trees all over so getting a good supply of pecans is just a matter of knowing the right person. I make one every year at Thanksgiving.

http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/food-network-kitchens/pecan-pie-recipe/index.html

19. Peach Pie-there’s just something about the way the sweetness of the peaches and the flaky of the pie crust meet up that makes a peach pie just to die for.

20. Red Velvet Cake-I got into red velvet cake a few years back and just love it. I prefer mine with cream cheese frosting, though I’ve seen it made with other types. While I highly recommend the whole episode here if you just want the red velvet recipe fast forward to 13:20 or there about.

21. German Chocolate Cake-I think you will agree that the most important thing about German chocolate cake is the coconut pecan frosting. I don’t know what type of pie it is that’s in the picture with this one (probably a chocolate cream pie) but i thought it was appropriate.

22. Yellow Cake with Chocolate Frosting-I’ll be honest. If I’m going to make a cake, this is usually it. And it usually comes out of a box. I’m not ashamed to admit it. That’s the truth. It’s just easier. But, I’m not going to put a picture of a box right here, so I’ve got this one. You’ll have to trust me that it’s a yellow cake under all of that lovely chocolate frosting.

23. Carrot Cake-Carrots are, in my experience, one of the sweetest vergitables you can find. And I love the combination of the tangy cream cheese with dense, moist cake.\][p;o

24. Spice Cake-Similar to carrot cake, but without the carrot. And a bit spicier 🙂 Also really good wth cream chese frosting, though this recipe uses a butter cream frosting.

25.  Apple Pie-There are a lot of apple pie recipes out there. And a lot of opinions on what makes the best pie. My mom puts raisins and nuts (usually walnuts) in hers. I’ve got a friend who swears by a crumb topping. I’ve even seen people make “apple” pie with Ritz crackers. But here I’ve decided to go original, as that’s what i usually do when I make apple pie.

26. Fresh Strawberry Pie-Nothing says summer like fresh strawberries. I know its not summer right now, well, it kind of is, but not the right part of summer. Still, it’s a nice thought.

27. Pumpkin Pie-Got to go with the original here. Everyone is always trying to change it up, but I think why mess with an original?

This isn’t a list of all the cake and pie that I like, but it’s close. I just wanted to share this with you all because I do love it so.

Another Tuesday another day without internet L because of that I don’t know when this will be posted, but I’m hoping that it’ll happen today when I’m at school. I’ll have internet there. And by the time I get home I should have internet at my house! That would be a grateful thing indeed.

  1. Abba-upbeat, fun songs that my kids sing along with, who can beat that?
  2. Purdue OWL-if you’ve ever had to write an academic paper this website has come in handy.
  3. My Dad-he turned 59 this week, didn’t complain about getting older and sat at my house all morning waiting for the cable people to fix my internet
  4. Avocados-nothing says good fat like a cool creamy avocado
  5. Chocolate-nothing cures a bad day like a bar of chocolate
  6. Eyes-without them we wouldn’t be able to do most of what we do
  7. My brain-do you know how your brain works? We cannot create artificially what our brains do automatically. It’s amazing.
  8. Readymade BBQ beef-ok, so maybe not traditional or what others would want, but it works for me and its quick and easy and tastes good.
  9. Shoes-because shoes keep your feet safe
  10. Socks-because without them your feet would smell in your shoes.

Have a wonderful evening everyone!

Thankful Tuesday

Standard

So, this week has been hectic. I’ve been posting my Thankful Tuesday posts over on my other blog, but I’ve got something else going on there and this blog has been neglected, so I thought I’d post over here.

  1. My kids-I love them more than anything
  2. My Boyfriend-see #1
  3. My mother-see #1
  4. My sister-see #1 and the fact that she’s the only babysitter that I know who will work for Oreos
  5. My apartment complex-Just purchased from the college, it now falls under campus rules, which means no drinking or smoking or drugs 🙂
  6. School-not mine, the kids. Because as much as I love them (see #1) it’s great to have a few minutes to do things with out them, with out having to get a babysitter (see #4)
  7. Blankies-without which Boo would not sleep
  8. School-not the kids’, mine. Because I love learning.
  9. Frozen pizza-quickest dinner I know.
  10. Sleep

And because it’s my blog and I want to I’m sharing this picture of Boo and her doppelganger she made for her preschool class. Looks just like her doesn’t it? (Kidding, but she had a blast with it.)
